Elizabeth Newton Honored for Commitment to Young New Yorkers

The Legal Aid Society’s Elizabeth Newton, a Supervising Attorney in the Queens Trial Office is this year’s recipient of the Stephanie E. Kupferman Juvenile Justice Award from the Women’s Bar Association of the State of New York (WBASNY).

This award is given to a WBASNY member who has shown outstanding achievement in legal matters involving juveniles over a period of three or more years, as a prosecutor, defense counselor law guardian.

Liz’s passion for social justice on behalf of the indigent led her to a myriad of public interest positions. After graduating from CUNY Law School, she began her legal career with the Administration for Children Services, prosecuting child abuse and neglect cases in Family Court.

After ACS, her trajectory brought her to The Legal Aid Society, Civil Practice where she represented tenants in Housing Court. Several years later, she switched to the Criminal Defense Practice where she has represented thousands of low-income New Yorkers including Youthful Offenders.

Newton is active in the legal community and often volunteers as an Arbitrator in the Smalls Claims Division of the Civil Court in Queens County.

Congratulations to Liz, who was honored at a ceremony earlier this month.
