LAS Decries Eviction of Residents Displaced by Hurricane Ida

The Legal Aid Society is condemning a decision by the New York City Department of Housing Preservation and Development (HPD) to evict residents of the Millenium Downtown hotel who were displaced by Hurricane Ida.

Residents were given very little notice and the New York City Police Department officers from the Emergency Services Unit were deployed in full tactical gear to assist with these evictions, further traumatizing these New Yorkers who’ve already lost so much from the storm. At least one disabled individual who was removed Saturday was forced to seek refuge on the subway.

According to Gothamist, families will be taken to a homeless shelter if they cannot find other accommodations by tomorrow.

Legal Aid calling on the City to immediately work to provide the displaced residents housing, and in the interim, extend the hotel rooms until everyone is placed and all individual needs are accommodated, as prescribed by the law.
