Judith Goldiner, Attorney-in-Charge of the Legal Aid Society’s Civil Law Reform Unit, appeared on Spectrum News to discuss the threat to thousands of struggling New Yorkers posed by the expiration of Governor Cuomo’s eviction moratorium, which is currently set to end October 1st.
The expiration would leave 14,000 families immediately susceptible to eviction and put at risk another 400,000 New Yorkers who are no longer able to pay their rent due to the economic effects of the COVID-19 shutdown.
“Were asking [Gov. Cuomo] to really step up and do a real moratorium on evictions that’s linked to where we are with this pandemic,” Goldiner said, “instead of having this go month by month and letting people live with the stress of knowing that at the end of [the month] they could lose their home. We’re asking the Governor to extend a real eviction moratorium that’s going to help these 14,000 families in New York City, many more families upstate, as well as future families until we are able to fully reopen the state.”
