LAS Decries Governor's Hollow Rebrand on Tax Break for Developers

The Legal Aid Society is calling out Governor’s Hochul proposed reform to 421-a, tax break to developers in exchange for offering more affordable housing, as nothing more than a hollow rebrand, reports POLITICO.

The Governor unveiled her “Affordable Neighborhoods for New Yorkers” proposal as part of the State’s new budget, but the plan would simply continue the existing credit, resulting in a colossal waste of tax dollars.

“This tax credit has long served as a handout to New York’s real estate industry, only generating a finite amount of truly affordable housing for New Yorkers in need,” a statement from Legal Aid reads in part. “We urge the Legislature to reject this proposal outright so that the City can reallocate these tens of millions of dollars to expand already proven housing programs.”

Among the programs housing advocates want funded is CityFHEPS, a highly successful voucher program that has already connected thousands of New Yorkers to safe and affordable housing.
