LAS Slams Illegal Recording of Client-Attorney Calls

The Legal Aid Society released a joint statement with other New York City defender organizations demanding answers after the revelation that confidential client-attorney calls were wrongly recorded and wound up in the hands of local District Attorney’s offices. The mistake could impact hundreds, possibly thousands of court cases citywide, as reported by the New York Daily News.

“We urge the New York City Department of Correction and Securus to immediately ensure that no privileged calls are recorded ever again,” reads a joint statement from The Legal Aid Society, Brooklyn Defender Services, The Bronx Defenders, Neighborhood Defender Service of Harlem, New York County Defender Services and Queens Defenders. “We call on the district attorneys to denounce this practice, and to immediately disclose and sequester any attorney-client recordings in their possession, without listening to them first.”
