LAS Slams Information Blackout on Vaccinations at ICE Detention Center

The Legal Aid Society and public defenders across New York are calling attention to the pointed lack of information made publicly available by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) over the vaccination status of immigrants detained at the Buffalo (Batavia) Federal Detention Facility.

The call for greater oversight of COVID-19 at immigrant detention centers comes amidst a spike in COVID-19 cases in detention centers across the country, as reported by City Limits.

Delaney Rohan, an attorney with The Legal Aid Society, says he knows of two ICE detainees at the Orange County Jail in New York who heard that both a guard and a nurse will not get the vaccine, noting that “there have also been high rates of vaccine refusal by correctional staff” that may very well be putting incarcerated individuals at risk of infection.
