LAS Decries Lack of Proper Ventilation in Homeless Shelters

The Legal Aid Society is decrying the lack of proper ventilation in congregate homeless shelters as New Yorkers are being moved out of hotel rooms and back into group settings, as reported by Curbed.

A recent decision by the Cuomo administration to loosen ventilation requirements has resulted in people being transferred to facilities whose air circulation infrastructure has not been upgraded and cannot keep them safe.

The timing is especially dangerous as New York is experiencing a surge in the highly transmittable Delta variant of the COVID-19 virus.

“This is a slow-moving train wreck,” said Josh Goldfein, an attorney with The Legal Aid Society’s Homeless Rights Project. “It’s just reckless on public-health grounds, if nothing else, to send people to sites where there are likely to be superspreader events that will radiate out to the community.”
