LAS Slams NYS for Failing to Test Incarcerated People

The Legal Aid Society is calling for the state to regularly test incarcerated New Yorkers. Stefen Short, Staff Attorney at the Prisoners’ Rights Project of The Legal Aid Society, appeared on Capitol Pressroom to explain how New York has not followed new CDC guidelines for incarcerated people, leading to little improvement in the locked-down environment that experts have called a breeding ground for infections.

“Our clients are continuing to report that, in spite of what the department has said it has done to manage coronavirus in the prisons, it hasn’t done enough,” said Short. “We continue to receive reports that tests are not readily available [and] when people request tests they’re not being provided tests expeditiously or even at all.”
