LTE: Eviction Moratorium Benefits Both Tenants and Landlords

Judith Goldiner, Attorney-In-Charge of the Civil Law Reform Unit at The Legal Aid Society, penned a letter to the editor in the New York Daily News pointing to the fact that New York’s eviction moratorium also benefits landlords as, per federal legislation, landlords who evict their tenants are precluded from qualifying for precious rent relief funds.

New York received a windfall in rent relief dollars from Washington ($2.4 billion) earmarked for landlords who comply with the law.

Goldiner also called on Albany to quickly set up and make operational its Rent Relief Program so tenants and landlords in need can start receiving funds.

“Washington designed this legislation as a win-win: Tenants make good on owed rent and landlords recoup monies lost. It’s on Albany to swiftly set the program up in a manner that will truly serve both tenants and landlords in need.”
