LAS Decries Mayor's Plan to Involuntarily Hospitalize Homeless New Yorkers

The Legal Aid Society is condemning Mayor Eric Adam’s plan to involuntarily hospitalize homeless New Yorkers who are suffering from mental illness.

“Forcibly removing and involuntarily condemning anyone to a hospital is not only illegal, but immoral and another form of incarceration,” reads a statement from Legal Aid.

“As the citywide defender organization serving vulnerable New Yorkers, we unequivocally reject the Mayor’s plan and his continued insistence on using law enforcement to intervene in incidents that require compassionate medical care,” the statement continues. “The Mayor’s plan criminalizes mental health.”

Legal Aid called on the Mayor to rescind his plan and instead invest in communities, prioritize supportive housing, and advance needed statewide measures that provide alternatives to incarceration such as the Treatment Not Jails Act.
