The Legal Aid Society is morning the passing of Anthony Scott, a client who recently attempted suicide while in City custody at central booking in Manhattan. Mr. Scott is at least the fourteenth person to die this year due to the ongoing humanitarian crisis in City jails, as reported by The New York Times.
“We are devastated to learn of Anthony Scott’s passing, and extend the deepest condolences to his family, friends and community during this tragically difficult time,” said Tina Luongo, Attorney-In-Charge of the Criminal Defense Practice at The Legal Aid Society.
“Throughout his life, Mr. Scott was continually criminalized for his struggle with mental illness, and our criminal legal system has never had the comprehensive tools necessary to serve New Yorkers with acute needs like Mr. Scott,” Luongo continued. “These deaths are preventable, but the City has consistently failed in its obligation to prevent them.”
Legal Aid called on leaders in government to prioritize both policy and funding to support robust programming for people with mental health issuesto prevent further suffering and loss of life.
Throughout the current crisis in City jails, Legal Aid has continued to call on judges and district attorneys to stop requesting and setting bail in order to keep New Yorkers out of custody. Mr. Scott was being held on $15,000 cash bail.
