New York City Council Passes Police Reform Bills, Key Anti-Surveillance POST Act

The New York City Council has passed a new package of police reform bills with broad support on Thursday, presciently addressing many of the complaints over procedures and misconduct that have roiled the national consciousness in the wake of the killing of George Floyd.

Among the key bills in the legislation, Legal Aid applauded the Public Oversight of Surveillance Technology Act, which would require police to disclose how they use surveillance technology and what safeguards it has in place to protect civil liberties. Other bills outlaw chokeholds, as well as create a “penalty system” for officers who accumulate a track record of misconduct and disciplinary issues, reports CNN.

“Today’s passing of the POST Act signals a critical shift in transparency and a significant step in the larger fight for police accountability to protect communities of color, the LGBTQ+ community, and all overly policed communities,” said Jerome Greco, a Legal Aid Society attorney.
