NYC Immigration Court Transfers Cases to Be Heard Remotely in Texas

Starting last Friday, all cases scheduled in the Varick St. immigration will be heard at the Fort Worth Immigration Adjudication Center in Texas, reports Documented NY.

The decision has created confusion as to how immigration lawyers are to file documents and appear remotely to represent their clients. Some defenders have called the change into question, stressing the difficulties inherent in preparing for cases in NYC’s COVID-19 lockdown environment.

“It’s absolutely irresponsible, absolutely inefficient and it has a little regard for the due process rights of our clients,” said Luis Mancheno, a supervising attorney in the Immigration Law Unit at the Legal Aid Society.
