NYPD Officer Who Used Illegal Chokehold Forced to Retire

The Legal Aid Society hailed news that NYPD Detective Fabio Nunez – a Neighborhood Coordination Officer who employed an illegal chokehold and a taser without provocation on Tomás Medina, a Legal Aid client – was found guilty by the NYPD and forced into retirement, reports the New York Daily News.

In February, on the two-year anniversary of the Civilian Complaint Review Board substantiating the aforementioned complaints against Nunez, Legal Aid called on Mayor Bill de Blasio and NYPD Commissioner Dermot Shea to move forward with the disciplinary process and impose the presumptive penalty of termination.

“[This outcome] sends a message to NYPD officers that the use of chokeholds and Tasers will not be tolerated and that there will be actual consequences for engaging in such misconduct,” said Molly Griffard, Legal Fellow with the Cop Accountability Project at The Legal Aid Society.
