LAS Urges NYS Senate to Pass #Right2RemainSilent Legislation

The Legal Aid Society and BronxConnect applauded the New York State Senate Children and Families Committee for voting in favor of critical legislation (S.2800/A.5891) that will codify young New Yorkers’ right to counsel before a police interrogation, as reported by El Diario.

The organizations also called on Senate Majority Leader Stewart-Cousins and Assembly Speaker Carl Heastie to bring this bill to a floor vote in the Senate and the Assembly immediately.

Last week, dozens of organizations from across New York State, launched the #Right2RemainSilent campaign in support of this legislation. Video of a New York City Police Department officer using coercive and deceptive tactics to induce a young New Yorker to waive his Miranda rights during a police interrogation was released as part of the campaign.
