Op-Ed: Racial Progress Needs Systemic Change, Not a Rare Conviction

Zamir Ben-Dan, Julia Jenkins and Izel Fortunato, representatives of the Black Attorneys of Legal Aid caucus, address the recent Derek Chauvin verdict and the continuing issues of police violence and racism in a new piece for the New York Law Journal.

Chauvin, a former Minneapolis police officer, was found guilty on all charges related to the death of George Floyd. “Convicting Derek Chauvin was a good thing,” the attorneys write. “It was necessary, and it was the right thing to do. But progress is not realized by a rare conviction; it is realized through systemic change.”

“Anyone who thinks we can eradicate police brutality without grappling with the racism that exists in society at large is dreaming.”
