Op-Ed: State Policy Reforms Will Stabilize Housing in the Pandemic, and After

Judith Goldiner, Attorney-in-Charge of the Civil Law Reform Unit at the Legal Aid Society, penned a joint op-ed in Crain’s with representatives of New York for Enterprise Community Partners and the Real Estate Board of New York urging lawmakers to enact several key reforms to expand eligibility for rental assistance programs and prevent evictions.

The authors are members of The Eviction Prevention Roundtable, a collaborative effort led by affordable housing owners, service providers and nonprofits working together to stave off a wave of evictions that have been threatening the city throughout the COVID-19 pandemic.

“By enacting vital reforms to increase access to existing resources, New York’s elected officials can help ensure that many more vulnerable tenants can stay in their homes,” the op-ed states. “That is why we are urging New York lawmakers to enact several key reforms to the state Family Homelessness and Eviction Prevention Supplement, the CityFHEPS and One Shot Deals programs to expand eligibility for these existing rental assistance programs and prevent evictions.”
