Sabrina Talukder – an immigration attorney with the Exploitation Intervention Project at The Legal Aid Society – appeared on Sunday’s episode of This is Life with Lisa Ling on CNN to call for the decriminalization of sex work, as prohibition continues to harm already vulnerable communities including people of color, LGBTQ+ youth, and those who have historically shoulder the brunt of over-policing.
Talukder argues that decriminalization will afford sex workers the basic economic rights enjoyed by other Americans, and warns of the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on the ability of sex workers to survive.
“Business owners and traffickers are going to be able to make my clients work even more hours for even less money and ask them to do even more things that they don’t want to do because they know how financially desperate my clients are,” said Talukder. “The most important thing that can be done to help my clients is the decriminalization of sex work, because that directly affects individuals that are being trafficked as well as those experiencing wage exploitation.”
