LAS Secures Ruling to Protect New York Rent Stabilization, Reforms

The Legal Aid Society, Legal Services NYC, and Selendy Gay PLLC, along with the NY Attorney General’s office, secured a U.S. Supreme Court order that denies landlords’ petitions to review two outstanding matters.  The order leaves in place the Second Circuit rulings that upheld the Housing Stability and Tenant Protection Act of 2019 and New York’s Rent Stabilization Law.

The decision ends all current challenges to New York’s housing laws and follows decisions by the United States Supreme Court to decline to review three prior Second Circuit rulings dismissing lawsuits by landlord groups challenging New York’s long-standing Rent Stabilization Laws.

“Today’s decision preserves the unanimous Second Circuit rulings which found that these lawsuits were always wrong on the law and devoid of merit,” reads a statement from the organizations.

“Since 1969, New York’s Rent Stabilization Law has provided affordable housing for millions of New Yorkers, preventing displacement and combating homelessness,” the statement continues. “and we will continue to challenge any and all efforts aimed at eroding the well-established and lawful protections that the communities we serve rely on.”
