Tina Luongo Steps Into New ABA Leadership Role

Tina Luongo, Chief Attorney of the Criminal Defense Practice at The Legal Aid Society, is the new chair of the American Bar Association’s (ABA) Section Officers Conference (SOC).

Luongo will guide the SOC in its mission to promote effective communication, advocacy, and innovation across the ABA’s diverse leadership landscape at a vital time in the organization’s history as the leading professional association for lawyers.

Tina has led the Criminal Defense Practice at Legal Aid since 2014, where they are responsible for the daily operation of all of the practice’s trial, appellate, post-conviction, law reform, and parole defense work. Tina plays an active role in the development of the Criminal Defense Practice’s training programs, networks across the country with other criminal justice leaders on ways to improve the overall public defender profession, and plays a key role in many of this City’s criminal justice reform initiatives.

In addition to their work at Legal Aid, Luongo has held numerous leadership roles within the ABA, including Chair of the Task Force on Comprehensive Representation and Co-Chair of the Women in Criminal Justice Task Force. They are also past president of the Chief Defender Association of New York and serve on the boards of the National Legal Aid & Defender Association and was a founding member of the National Association for Public Defense.
