Twyla Carter, Attorney-in-Chief and Chief Executive Officer of The Legal Aid Society, reflects on her first year leading the organization with an opinion piece featured in the New York Law Journal.
Carter praised Legal Aid staff for their enduring commitment to their clients. She touched on important victories such as a settlement that will ensure dental coverage for millions of New Yorkers and legislation that, once signed, will ensure continued connections between children and their birth families. She also stressed Legal Aid’s ongoing work on multiple fronts including defending the City’s Right to Shelter laws and fighting to protect incarcerated New Yorkers from the deplorable conditions on Rikers Island.
Carter also reaffirmed her commitment towards securing needed funding to significantly increase baseline salaries for all staff to ensure that the New Yorkers who rely on Legal Aid continue to have access to world-class legal representation.
“Our greatest triumphs are measured in the lives of the New Yorkers we’ve impacted and the profound difference we’ve made in their communities,” Carter writes. “There’s no place I would rather be, and there’s no group of people I would rather be in this fight with.”
