Twyla Carter Named Top Nonprofit Power Player

Twyla Carter, Attorney-in-Chief and Chief Executive Officer of The Legal Aid Society, has been named to the 2025 Nonprofit Power Players list from PoliticsNY and amNY.

The leaders highlighted on this year’s list are the driving forces behind a variety of programs and initiatives improving the lives of New Yorkers from all walks of life. Focusing on important issues such as education access, race and gender equity, immigrant justice, affordable housing, food insecurity and more, the 2025 Nonprofit Power Players are vital leaders in the fight for a better New York for all.

During Twyla’s tenure, Legal Aid’s attorneys and staff have worked tirelessly to serve the needs of low-income New Yorkers. In the past year, they have achieved significant victories, including a court ruling that appointed a remediation manager to oversee Rikers Island, a crucial first step in ending the ongoing humanitarian crisis that has plagued the facility.

Immigration attorneys won an injunction blocking the use of the Alien Enemies Act to deport our immigrant neighbors, and advocacy on behalf of Legal Aid’s youngest clients moved forward legislation to reform the flawed system of anonymous reporting to Child Protective Services.

Since day one, Carter has worked relentlessly to improve contract procurement and payments and securing additional funding to significantly increase baseline salaries for all staff.

Congratulations to Twyla; read the full list here.
