Khadine is working to protect the homes of New Yorkers. As a staff attorney in our Foreclosure Prevention Project, Khadine advocates for homeowners and helps them stay in their houses, all while building a stronger community.

Our primary goal is to save homes and stabilize housing for low and moderate income homeowners in the Bronx.

For over a decade, Khadine has helped keep housing affordable in the Bronx. After working with tenants for several years, Khadine joined our Foreclosure Prevention Project in 2014. In her current role, she works with clients to save their homes and ensure stabilized housing for low and moderate income homeowners in the Bronx. Khadine understands that her work goes far beyond just fighting foreclosure. The issues her clients face are far-reaching, and through her advocacy she helps address their root causes. “Our work touches on so many different areas of people’s lives: housing, government benefits, elder care, health issues and consumer issues.. We can provide that holistic representation.” Khadine uses the resources of The Legal Aid Society to ensure that clients get help in any and every area they need.

The foreclosure crisis disproportionately affected people of color. Even ten years later, homeowners of color are still struggling to catch up and are yet to turn that corner.

Homeowners in the Bronx are still struggling with the effects of predatory lending and the resulting housing market crash. As Khadine notes, the problems caused by the crash “disproportionately affected people of color. Even ten years later, homeowners of color are still struggling to catch up and are yet to turn that corner.” Scammers and speculators often target these vulnerable homeowners – many of whom are seniors and homeowners who are surrounded by misinformation and may not even know what options they have to avoid foreclosure. Thankfully, Khadine and her colleagues offer clients essential resources, walk them through the legal process, and advocate on their behalf for fair outcomes in court-mandated settlement conferences and other court proceedings. Khadine gives these New Yorkers a voice, helping preserve their housing for generations to come.
