Campos v. New York City Housing Authority

The Legal Aid Society brought this lawsuit on behalf of twenty Section 8 participants against the New York City Housing Authority (NYCHA), to challenge widespread and known computer errors that caused the wrongful termination of Section 8 program participants’ subsidies. NYCHA also failed to provide to participants any notice when their benefits were to be terminated or any opportunity for redress.

In 2014, a federal judge approved a settlement agreement requiring NYCHA to temporarily review manually each proposed termination of Section 8 participants’ subsidies for failure to recertify their income, and further requiring NYCHA to turn over terminated participants’ casefiles so as to ensure that proper process was followed, in addition to other oversight requirements.
