The Legal Aid Society filed this class-action lawsuit on behalf of recipients of public assistance and food stamps whose benefits were wrongfully reduced or stopped between 2007 and 2015. Tens of thousands of individuals received notices from the New York City Human Resources Administration (HRA) stating that their subsistence level cash assistance and/or SNAP benefits were being terminated or reduced due to an alleged failure to comply with HRA’s work requirements. In November 2018, we reached a settlement agreement which included substantial monetary and procedural relief to members of the plaintiff class. As of May 2022, 54,280 eligible class members received back-payments totaling $22,161,369.
