For the first time since its founding, Legal Aid’s main support came from lawyers. Sixty percent of all contributions came from the legal community, and this commitment from the private bar continues to this day. During the 50th anniversary celebration, William D. Guthrie, President of The Association of the Bar of the City of New York, an honorary Vice President of The Legal Aid Society and a former partner in Guthrie, Cravath & Henderson, said that it was the duty of the organized Bar “to serve the poor to the fullest measure of its ability and resources.”
