Magdy Hanna, a client of The Legal Aid Society, has $25,000 in debt after taking out loans to cover dental work that he thought was covered by his insurance, as reported by the PIX11 News.
Mr. Hanna was given oral and written approval for dental implants from his healthcare provider UnitedHealthcare, but after the extensive procedure, his dentist informed him that his insurance would not pay for the work. Magdy went into debt and paid for the work himself, assuming the reimbursement would come, but thus far he has only received $2,000 from his provider. Legal Aid is fighting for full reimbursement.
“It’s been extraordinarily stressful for him,” said Rebecca Novick, Director of The Legal Aid Society’s Health Law Unit. “Nobody told him that, in fact, there was a limit to his Medicare benefits, and nobody explained to him that he would have needed to be at a provider who was going to also seek services from Medicaid.”
Mr. Hanna is in a plan designed for people who have both Medicare and Medicaid insurance. The plan is responsible for helping him coordinate and understand his benefits.
“I’m a human being,” said Mr. Hanna. “And what the insurance is doing to me makes me feel like nothing.”
