Mayor Bill de Blasio announced today that his Administration will form a working group to eliminate solitary confinement practices still present at City jails with the goal of eradicating the practice come this fall. In response, The Legal Aid Society called the move “too little too late” and urged the Mayor to immediately outlaw the practice for good, reports the New York Daily News.

“The medical conditions that make solitary confinement exceptionally dangerous were known long before Layleen Polanco’s death, and she might still be with her family and chosen family today had the city acted on that knowledge earlier. The city should end solitary confinement under any name today, and the Board of Correction should promulgate rules at once that address all forms of isolated confinement,” said The Legal Aid Society.
