The Legal Aid Society condemned Staten Island DA Michael McMahon in response to news that his office will refuse to prosecute New York City Police Department (NYPD) officers who violate the City’s recently enacted diaphragm law, which prohibits officers from employing restraints that put pressure on someone’s chest, neck or back during an arrest, reports the New York Post.
Legal Aid attorneys slammed the DA McMahon in a statement released afterwards, alleging that he possesses a “clear bias problem.”
“[W]hen it comes to holding police officers accountable for committing heinous acts of misconduct, the NYPD can count on DA McMahon for special treatment,” The Legal Aid Society said in a statement.
