Elected officials and a range of homelessness and immigration advocates, including The Legal Aid Society, rallied today at Foley Square, a day before the City is expected to start evicting families with children from local shelters.
The Adams Administration announced the 60-day notice for families to leave their shelter in October 2023, which initially would have displaced families around Christmas, but postponed until the new year with an expected start date of January 9. The Administration enacted the 30-day limit for single adults at the end of November which led to long lines of people waiting in the cold for hours to re-apply for shelter.
“We are the voices of change, the champions of compassion, and the architects of a better tomorrow. Together, we will fight this cruel rule, not just for the homeless and immigrants, but for the soul of our city,” said Adriene Holder, Chief Attorney for Legal Aid’s Civil Practice, speaking at today’s rally. “We will not rest until every person, regardless of their circumstances, finds warmth, shelter, and dignity.”
