LAS Demands Release of DA's "Problem Cop" Lists in Wake of 50-A Repeal

The Legal Aid Society and other NYC public defender organizations are calling for full disclosure of records kept by District Attorneys from the city’s five boroughs detailing misconduct by police officers. While partial lists detailing determined officers to have lied in court or been named in civil lawsuits had been previously released, the repeal of NYC’s 50-A law protecting officers accused of misconduct has prompted demands for total transparency from legal advocates throughout the city.

“District attorneys, the city and law enforcement agencies can no longer hide behind Police Secrecy Law 50-A,” Molly Griffard, a legal fellow with The Legal Aid Society’s Cop Accountability Project, tells the Queens Daily Eagle. “The DAs should disclose any and all records relating to police misconduct in a manner that is easily accessible to New Yorkers.”

Asserting that the 50-a repeal alone won’t go far enough to compel the release of police misconduct records, The Legal Aid Society has called on Mayor Bill de Blasio and the City Council to make NYPD disciplinary records available immediately.
