Twyla Carter Named to New York City Power 100 List

Twyla Carter, Attorney-in-Chief and Chief Executive Officer of The Legal Aid Society, has been honored as part of City and State’s annual NYC Power 100 list.

This prestigious list, researched and written by John Celock, identifies the most influential public officials, business executives, labor leaders, advocates, and activists in the new New York City.

As Legal Aid celebrates its 150th anniversary, the organization stands ready to meet the challenges of an uncertain moment. In the past year, staff have achieved significant victories, including a court ruling that appointed a remediation manager to oversee Rikers Island, a crucial first step in ending the ongoing humanitarian crisis that has plagued the facility.

Immigration attorneys won an injunction blocking the use of the Alien Enemies Act to deport our immigrant neighbors, and advocacy on behalf of Legal Aid’s youngest clients moved forward legislation to reform the flawed system of anonymous reporting to Child Protective Services.

Since joining Legal Aid in 2022, Carter has worked relentlessly to improve contract procurement and payment processes and to secure additional funding to significantly increase baseline salaries for all staff.

Congratulations to Twyla; read the full list here.
