People ex. rel. Stoughton v. Shea

The Legal Aid Society filed an emergency lawsuit against the New York Police Department on behalf of 108 New Yorkers who were detained illegally, remaining in NYPD custody over 24 hours after their arrest, during the George Floyd protests and during the worst of the COVID-19 pandemic. New York law requires arraignments to be held within 24 hours of an arrest absent exceptional circumstances.
