Projects, Units & Initiatives
The Legal Aid Society’s Reentry Services Unit assists people who are coming home after being in prison. Returning to the community can be both exciting and challenging. Our mission is to give people the support they need to feel safe, find opportunities, and be part of a caring community.
As a pilot project launched in 2025, our unit currently supports clients from Legal Aid’s Domestic Violence Survivors Justice Act, Sex Offender Registration Act, Wrongful Conviction, and Parole Advocacy projects with a goal of expanding our services to additional Legal Aid clients in the future.
We work one-on-one with each person to create a plan that fits their needs and goals. These plans help guide them as they rebuild their lives. We help people find safe housing, get food and clothes, and apply for important documents like ID cards and government benefits. We also connect them with medical and mental healthcare and provide life skills training like how to manage money, apply for jobs, and navigate technology.
Just as importantly, we help people build social networks and find community. At the center of everything we do is a promise to treat people with respect, help them feel confident, and support them as they move forward with hope.
We have created How to Guides to help people obtain important documents and services:
The New York Public Library has also created a directory of agencies that help formerly incarcerated people:
